Our public/private collaborative consists of the following entities that are committed to improving the quality of education for the underserved in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area : Microsoft’s Partners in Learning resources, The Miller Institute for Learning with Technology, Partners for Developing Futures, Georgia State University, Media Arts Technology High, and Operation Reach Atlanta. There is an urgent need to prepare students for college by improving their academic performance, and enhancing their ability to succeed and graduate. The specific target population for the proposed program is the underserved students who live in school zones that have not made “Adequate Yearly Progress” (AYP), and those students currently attending schools listed as “Needs Improvement” (NI) status. The top‐level objective of the STEAM project is to create and operate a world‐class living laboratory to leverage the efforts of innovative educators, helping translate vision and passion into measurable student achievement. The STEAM Lab will: 1. Generate new knowledge, curricula and pedagogy by offering and evaluating applied learning opportunities , while developing and retaining promising teachers and educational leaders by nurturing both physical and virtual learning communities to document and disseminate best practices 2. Launch a successful new high school that emphasizes Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics [STEM], using a Media Arts theme and incorporating a world class teacher recruitment program. This is synergistic with Goal 1 and illustrates how the Living Lab environment and culture can help to incubate early stage charter schools development. |
